Dental anxiety is not just a figment of the imagination; it’s a genuine concern that affects numerous individuals across age groups. The fear of visiting the dentist can be attributed to a lot of different reasons.
For some, it’s the memory of a painful childhood experience, while for others, it’s the daunting sound of dental equipment.
For many, this anxiety can lead to them avoiding dental appointments, leading to potential oral health problems like decay and gum disease.
The world of dentistry has witnessed considerable advancements over the decades. Procedures that were once lengthy and uncomfortable are now quick and virtually painless. Despite these advancements, many people are still anxious about having treatment done. The uncertainty around the procedure, duration, or potential discomfort can cause significant distress.
Sedation in dentistry is a beacon of hope for those struggling with dental anxiety. Sedation involves administering medication to make you feel relaxed and comfortable for the duration of your dental treatment.
Dental sedation is different to receiving a general anaesthetic (GA). During a general anestehtic procedure, you are unconscious and not able to co-operate with your dentist. During sedation, you remain conscious, awake and able to speak and respond to your dentist, however after your appointment, you may end up forgetting the details.
General anaesthesia is only available in hospitals
Oral sedation involves taking a pill taken on the morning of or the night before a dental procedure. The medicine will make you feel relaxed and take the edge off when it comes to your anxiety about the procedure you are about to have done.
Inhalation sedation involves using Nitrous Oxide or “laughing gas” to provide a calming effect. Inhalation sedation is quick and easy to administer, and the effects wear off very quickly after the procedure.
IV sedation is done during your dental procedure by experts and it involves administering sedative drugs directly into your veins. Your dentist can control the rate of sedation and can sedate you to deeper levels compared to the methods mentioned above.
Many people will choose to have IV sedation for more invasive procedures such as implants or surgical extractions.
Our state-of-the-art clinic in Tunbridge Wells proudly offers sedation options tailored to individual needs. Our owners Dr Mike Field and Melissa Atkinson have undergone extensive training in dental sedation and managing nervous patients.
Before any procedure, we believe in a comprehensive consultation process, evaluating the treatment’s nature and gauging your anxiety levels. Our goal is to craft a serene, fear-free environment for top-notch dental care.
